Cassettes and a phone call
As a kid I recorded Smashing Pumpkins and The Cure songs off the radio onto cassettes and sang them with my little sister, barely understanding a word. That’s how my English started. Years later, with a degree in International Relations, I made that first call from a cargo agency. I was a bundle of nerves, but I knew I could do it.

Football? India? Kids?
A colleague asked me, “You speak English, right?” That’s how I ended up coaching football for kids in India for a year, with my suitcase lost in Amsterdam. That’s where I learned to just jump in.

Teaching, and interpreting
One year wasn’t enough, so I moved to Bangalore. I taught my first Spanish classes, earned a diploma to teach it well, and had my first interpreting job, with a team of engineers negotiating with Spain.

The big leagues
That diploma opened the door to an international school. Planning whole units, assessing against clear criteria and Cambridge’s CIDTL made me a real teacher.

Online, for the world
When the pandemic hit, I went back to Colombia, did my Master’s in Bilingual Education and kept going online. Today I teach Spanish and English to students in different countries and interpret for companies and organizations. Two different jobs, one craft: making sure we understand each other.
I still talk fast, but now I know when to slow down. That’s what I do in every class and every interpretation: find the pace that carries your voice, whole, into another language.

¿India?
