Tokyo 2020 — the men’s 100m final
Watch and stop. The video has no commentary — you are the commentator.
Pause it at different moments and say where the athletes are.
At each pause, say where the runners are. Then make your own sentence
with a phrase from the warm-up.

At the start line: who is next to whom? Who is in between two other runners?
After the gun: who comes out of the blocks fastest?
Halfway: who is ahead of the rest, and who is close to him?
At the finish: who is in front of everyone — and who is too far away from the leaders to catch them?
Your turn: pause wherever you like and describe that moment in three sentences, each with a different phrase.
Keep this race in your head — we come back to it in stage 5 to explain why Jacobs won.

In class we read it together and turn your route into a conversation.

Why did it happen?
Drag each phrase into the right box. On a phone, tap the phrase and then tap the box.
These phrases do not tell us where — they tell us why, despite what, or who says so.
Back to the race
Jacobs was not the favourite. Explain the result — one sentence each, using a different phrase:
He won thanks to …
In spite of … , he …
According to the results, …
Kerley got silver instead of …
Nobody expected it except for …
Quick game — the blame game
Tell your partner one good thing and one bad thing that happened to you this week.
Your partner must react using because of, due to, thanks to or in spite of.
